Safety Glass

At O’Neill Glass we stock four varieties of safety glass. We stock laminated safety glass, tempered or toughened glass, georgian wire glass and fire rated glass.

Laminated Safety Glass

Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by an interlayer, of clear plastic film between its two layers of glass. The interlayer keeps the layers of glass together even when broken. Its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic "spider web" cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass
The plastic interlayer make cutting laminate glass difficult and dangerous when not attempted by a trained glazer. The practice involves cutting both sides separately and pouring a flammable liquid into the crack and lighting it to melt the plastic into two separate pieces.

Laminated Glass is usually used for security purposes to provide extra peace of mind. It is used in shop fronts, balconies, stairs, roof glazing, door panels, shelving and more. Laminated Glass can also be used in the production of decorative glass.

We stock laminated glass in two thicknesses, in 6.4mm and 11.5mm. Laminated Glass also comes in clear and an obscure white colour called opal laminate.

Tempered/Toughened Glass

Toughened Glass is glass that has gone through controlled thermal processes to increase its strength compared to normal glass. Toughened glass shatters into small fragments instead of sharp shards when broken making it safer and less likely to cause injury. As a result of its strength and safety toughened glass is used for door panels, front door panels, low glass panels and more.

Toughened glass must be cut to size before toughening and cannot be re-worked once toughened. Polishing the edges or drilling holes in the glass is carried out before the toughening process starts. If an attempt to cut down toughened glass were made the glass would shatter.

It is extremely important to have the correct measurements when ordering toughened glass. If you are not certain about the measurements you have taken getting a glazer like ourselves to help you is the best option as it will save you time and money, contact us at O’Neill Glass to organize a call out.
Toughened Glass comes in all sorts of thicknesses and types of glass. It takes up to a week for toughened glass to be processed as each piece is manufactured to order.

Georgian Wire Glass

Georgian Wire Polished Plate is a clear glass with thin square wires running through the centre and is fire rated for up to 30 minutes. The clear wired glass is slightly more expensive than the obscure version due to the polishing. This type of glass can be used in most frames including fire doors and screens. When broken the wires hold the glass together which also makes this an excellent safety glass.

Georgian Wire Cast is the obscure version of Georgian Polished Plate. It also has a fire rate of 30 minutes. It is slightly cheaper than the clear version and is often used in back doors providing safety and security.

Georgian Wire is 6mm in thickness.
